Stoja's blue-chip artists: Ross Bleckner

Ross Bleckner (born 1949, New York, USA) is an American artist whose work focuses on themes of loss, memory, and mortality. Educated at New York University and CalArts, Bleckner became known in the 1980s for his abstract paintings with optical effects, often incorporating floral motifs. These motifs, such as stylized flowers or wreaths, are intertwined with symbolism of the transience and fragility of life.
His works were strongly influenced by the AIDS epidemic, serving as a reflection of collective grief and remembrance of the victims, with floral elements often representing a memorial or mourning symbol. Bleckner combines abstract expression with a deep conceptual basis, allowing him to explore complex emotional states. His paintings are known for their rich texture and play of light, creating a meditative experience.
Bleckner's works are part of the permanent collections of museums such as MoMA and Guggenheim, and in 2024 his works were added to the permanent collections of two other world-renowned art institutions: in Europe, he is now part of the permanent collection of the Thyssen-Bornemisza in Madrid and in Vienna at the Albertina Modern. In America, he has also landed in Kansas City at The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, which is an extraordinary achievement for the artist, further strengthening his status as an invaluable figure in art history and a blue-chip artist.

For any potential art buyer, market value is a key consideration. Bleckner’s works are not only aesthetically captivating, but also a strategic investment, as evidenced by decades of consistent growth and stability in his art market. His transition into concrete numbers is impressive, as his art has consistently appreciated over time, reflecting the general respect for his talent and the continued demand for his works.
Bleckner’s auction record is an impressive $277,200 for a work titled Untitled, which was sold at auction at Christie’s New York in 2022. This exceptional sale, along with numerous other significant transactions, attests to a strong and stable market position that is attractive to collectors and investors alike. Purchasing a Bleckner work is not only an aesthetic acquisition, but also a strategic investment in the work of a proven artist, whose value shows long-term growth potential. In our gallery, we proudly present works that reflect this exceptional dynamism and are an excellent choice to enrich your collection.

At Stoja Art Collection Gallery, we currently have seven works by Bleckner on display. Among them, we highlight three: the first is a monumental canvas titled "Prince/Frog". With its dimensions, comparable to the paintings in New York and Madrid, this work at first glance resembles a garden full of tulips, but at the same time it is deeply imbued with Bleckner's own interpretation of the famous fairy tale the Frog Prince.
Another important work in our collection is the "newer version" of his iconic work "Throbbing Hearts" from 1994. The painting with a dark gray background, decorated with blurred red spots symbolizing beating hearts, is complemented in our version by characteristic floral motifs. The addition creates an extraordinary contrast and testifies to Bleckner's ability to express deep emotional states through symbols through abstract form.
The third work is from a rare, almost sold-out, golden series. The canvas titled "Around anyone", created in 2022, features a golden void reminiscent of the details of Klimt's works. The work presents flowers in various expressive colors, gently wrapped around a tall gray shadow, which represents a key element for our reflection and contemplation.
Bleckner's works are not only visually appealing works of art, but also an opportunity for collectors and investors to become owners of works by an artist who has left a lasting mark on the history of contemporary art. We invite you to view these works in our gallery - by prior arrangement - and see for yourself their exceptional quality.
