Pablo Atchugarry

Foreign artists · Uruguayan contemporary sculptor who mainly works with marble.

About author

Pablo Atchugarry, born in 1954 in Montevideo, Uruguay, is a contemporary Uruguayan sculptor known for his marble works that resemble the monoliths of early civilizations. Influenced by Contantino Brancusi and Michelangelo, Atchugarry treats sculpture as an extension of the materials he uses. "When you work directly with stone, especially marble, it's very dramatic because there's no going back," he explained. "Any part that is taken from a block will never be part of it again." Atchugarry initially worked with a variety of materials, including cement, iron and wood, and after visiting Italy in 1979 he became fascinated by the famous quarries and marble workshops of Carrara.

In 2007, the artist founded the non-profit institution Fundación Pablo Atchugarry in Manantiales, Uruguay, which promotes visual art, music and literature in the community. Atchugarry currently lives and works between Lecco, Italy and Manantiales, Uruguay. Today, the artist's works are in the collections of the National Museum of Visual Arts in Montevideo and the Perez Art Museum in Miami.
